Argentine’s muted response to scoring was, according to Bruno Fernandes, due to his unhappiness at recent flak he has taken from supporters
Alejandro Garnacho refused to celebrate scoring for Manchester United after accusing fans of losing faith in him, it has been claimed.
Garnacho scored the final goal in the 3-0 victory over Leicester City but appeared sullen despite his seventh goal of the campaign, showing little emotion in front of the Stretford End at Old Trafford.
United captain Bruno Fernandes spoke with the Argentina winger, 20, at the final whistle and told his team-mate he will always receive criticism from fans regardless of form. It came days after he was filmed on camera clashing with a fan ahead of the PAOK win in the Europa League.
“Garnacho scored a banger but didn’t celebrate like he should because he thinks he has lost faith from some fans,” said Fernandes. “I told him people will always moan but lots of people like you and enjoy what you do.
“I told him to celebrate, it was something special. He is a special player, we have difference-makers. They are the ones who win us games. We want them to score every game but that isn’t going to happen.”
Garnacho was confronted by a fan outside Old Trafford before their midweek European win, as he signed autographs. The supporter told him “you’ve got to pass better today, yeah, please? Pass better, score a goal and work on your first touch as well, yeah?”
The incident saw Garnacho walk towards the dressing room while asking the fan: “Why you not playing, man?” The incident has seen the supporter involved widely criticised on United fan sites as insulting.

Garnacho was among Erik ten Hag’s better performers at the start of the season despite the club struggling for results. Interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy chose to use him from the bench against Leicester to manage his workload after starting seven games in a row.
“I spoke to Alejandro Garnacho before the game, I told him, ‘you are playing so many games, I want you fresh from the bench to make an impact’ and I’m glad it worked out,” said Van Nistelrooy.
Fernandes opened the scoring and had a huge hand in the second goal as his finish flicked off Leicester full-back Victor Kristiansen and went down as an own goal.
“The Fantasy managers won’t be happy with you guys taking that goal off me,” joked the United captain.
